Last week, we talked about the crazy number of job applicants out there. Seriously, hiring managers are overwhelmed! Here we are in March 2024, and job seekers have really upped their game. There are tons of search tools, ways to fine-tune resumes with the right keywords, and even automated application fill-outs. If you haven’t tried something like ChatGPT yet, you might feel like you’re stuck on a deserted island!

But despite all these tools, I hear from so many people who still can’t get interviews, let alone job offers. Just yesterday, I spoke with a young woman who had sent out over 1,000 applications and hadn’t heard back once. Can you believe that?

Now, even if you’re the absolute perfect candidate, how is a hiring manager going to notice your resume among a sea of a thousand others that look just as polished?

Here’s the thing: it’s not all about technology. Think about reaching out to someone you know, like Marty, who just got promoted to Director after leaving Chase. You might say something like, “Hey Marty, congrats on your new role! I’m really interested in the Program Manager position under the CIO. Before I dive in, I wanted to check if there’s any way I could help you if they choose me. Is there an employee referral bonus?”

Chances are, Marty will remember you and might even give you a call. Even if there’s no referral bonus, he could offer some helpful advice or connections just because you reached out.

So, while having a standout resume is super important, don’t forget the power of networking. By combining a strong professional resume with a few thoughtful connections, you can really boost your chances of standing out in this competitive job market. It’s not just about applying; it’s about making those personal connections that could lead you to your next big opportunity!
