The Chicago-Naperville-Arlington Heights Metropolitan Division saw a significant increase in its unemployment rate, rising 1.1 percentage points to 4.8% compared to the previous year.  This statistic is surprising. It contrasts with the overall job growth reported for the Chicago area (+4,900 jobs), highlighting a potential mismatch between job creation and unemployment trends; and points to a potential skill mismatch which we will explore later.

  1. Naperville
Naperville is consistently ranked as one of the best places to live in Chicago. It has a strong economy, many corporate headquarters, and a thriving downtown area. Commuting to Naperville from downtown would be a challenge, however.  Long trip!

  2. Schaumburg
Schaumburg is known for Woodfield Mall. It’s home to many corporate offices and has a significant business district.

  3. Oak Brook
Oak Brook has several corporate headquarters and a great mall at Oakbrook Center.

  4. Evanston
Home to Northwestern University, Evanston has a diverse economy with opportunities in the education, healthcare, and technology sectors.

  5. Arlington Heights
Arlington Heights has a mix of retail, corporate offices, and light industry. It’s also slated to be the future home of the Bears.  Sorry, I root for the Packers.  Not sorry.

  6. Glenview
Glenview has seen significant growth and development, particularly with The Glen with fantastic restaurants and shopping.

  7. Downers Grove
Downers Grove is home to healthcare and technology companies and several corporate headquarters, including the tollway authority HQ (not my favorite place).

  8. Rosemont
Despite its small size Rosemont is very close to O’hare and many corporate offices.  They have an amazing convention and hospitality scene.

  9. Hoffman Estates
Hoffman Estates is home to the headquarters of several large corporations and has a mix of retail and office spaces.

  10. Northbrook
Northbrook has a strong retail presence, with Northbrook Court Mall being home to several corporate headquarters.

These suburbs tend to have lower unemployment rates than the state average and offer diverse job opportunities across various sectors, including technology, healthcare, finance, and retail. They also generally have good transportation links to downtown Chicago, accessible from the Kennedy and or 294,  making them attractive for businesses and commuters.
