Learning from My Experience
I made a mistake early in my career when I started interviewing. A high school friend mentioned a nearby company with job openings, so I sent her my resume. HR invited me for an interview, and eventually, I got hired.
Red Flags I Ignored
1. Long Hiring Process: The hiring process took a whole year.
2. Unexpected Travel: On my first day, my boss informed me that I would need to travel for three weeks—no prior discussion about whether this fit my personal life.
3. Lack of Resources: I requested reports and materials to understand the company culture and received nothing.
4. Unproductive Meetings: In weekly meetings, my boss mainly just took attendance.
As you can imagine, it only got worse from there.
The Importance of Leadership
Every day, I speak with people entering the job market. A Gallup study shows that at least 70% of employee happiness is linked to their boss. Remember, you don’t just work for a company; you work for your boss.
